Tirzepatide consultations

A little clarity before a care decision.

Imagine opening a page that offers a fast visit. You want to know what the medicine is, who will assess you and what you will pay.

Use this plain-language guide to put those questions in order before you pay for care.

Start with the medicine
Before the payment page
  1. The medicineWhat is this product?
  2. The careWho makes the decision?
  3. The moneyWhat is the full cost?

Ask for the name, the record and the full quote.

The name

A page names tirzepatide. First, find out which product it means.

What tirzepatide is

Tirzepatide can help you feel less hungry and help your body control blood sugar.

Hormones are chemical messages used by the body.

Tirzepatide works by imitating hormones from the gut, the part of the body that handles food.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) checks whether a medicine works and whether its risks are acceptable for a stated use.

Passing that check for a stated use is called FDA approval.

Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound, had FDA approval for specific uses on September 26, 2026.

The product label is the medicine's official information about its uses and risks.

Mounjaro

By September 26, 2026, Mounjaro's uses included blood sugar control for adults who have type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a health condition that changes how the body handles blood sugar.

Zepbound

Its weight-care approval, as of September 26, 2026, covers adults with obesity or overweight with a related health problem.

Obesity and overweight are medical weight categories.

The official medicine information says Zepbound is used along with eating fewer calories and being more active.

Calories are a measure of the energy in food.

Keep this questionWhich product is being offered, and for which health need?

The product

If a page offers a compounded option, stop at that word for a moment.

The name alone is not enough

When a pharmacy or doctor prepares medicine for a patient's need, this is called compounding.

An approved product

Mounjaro and Zepbound were approved tirzepatide products as of September 26, 2026.

A generic is a medicine approved as a version of a brand-name product.

On September 26, 2026, there was no FDA-approved generic form of tirzepatide.

A pharmacy-made medicine

As of September 26, 2026, pharmacy-made compounded medicines had no FDA approval.

FDA does not examine compounded medicines for quality, safety or how well they work before sale.

A product marked “for research purposes”

For weight-loss products carrying “not for human consumption” or “for research purposes” labels, FDA had issued warnings by September 26, 2026.

Those words mean for study, or not for people to use. They do not mean a visit as part of a medical study.

FDA called for avoiding those products, warning that their quality was unknown and that they could be harmful.

FDA's national list of medicines in short supply did not include tirzepatide on September 26, 2026.

During the shortage, US rules allowed pharmacies to make versions of tirzepatide that were much like the approved medicine.

That permission based on the shortage had ended by September 26, 2026.

US rules on September 26, 2026, put limits on making the same medicine often or in large amounts if an approved version was already available.

When a health professional with the right licence orders a medicine, that order is a prescription.

As of September 26, 2026, an exception could allow a pharmacy to make a changed version for a specific person.

The person issuing the prescription had to decide that changing the medicine made a meaningful difference for that patient.

A lower price alone did not meet that rule, as of September 26, 2026.

If the offer is compoundedWhich of my needs would an approved product leave unmet?

Ask whoever writes the prescription to explain the medicine's changes and why they matter for you.

The visit

An online visit sounds convenient. Check who will make the care decision.

Where care can happen

An in-person clinic offers a conversation in the room.

Telehealth is health care given remotely, using video, a phone call or messages exchanged online.

Rules for checking your health during an online visit differ between states, as of September 26, 2026.

Doctors needed valid permission, such as a licence, for the patient's location during a visit, under rules in place September 26, 2026.

A licence is official permission to practise. A clinician is a health professional who reviews your health and talks over treatment with you. Start with their full name. Ask which state board holds the licence for that kind of clinician.

A state medical board is the group that gives doctors their licences and shows whether those licences are still valid.

Its public records also show action taken against doctors for breaking the rules.

A record with no such action is a useful check, but it cannot show how good your care will be.
